Unfortunately for Canadians, the man they just reelected has more political courage than even NDP Bob Rae (he of the Rae days) who increased welfare so much that he brought Ontario to the verge of bankruptcy. These new Chretien programs may do just that for Canada. Unfortunately Canadians are already knee-deep in this sinkhole but we are going deeper. This is where we are now. The social engineers of the 60s and 70s built huge welfare projects to house welfare recipients. These huge buildings blocks in the sky just like those in Soviet Russia -- made sense to a social engineer. They housed large numbers of their clients in condensed areas. The fact that they subsequently lowered housing values in the surrounding areas was a delight to the social engineers. The public was slowly educated about these welfare addresses and areas. They saw the action nightly on TV. The addresses became synonymous with single mothers, welfare fraud, crime, police action, drugs, prostitution and racial problems. These projects now have their own subculture. They are full of unwed mothers and fatherless kids the boys, future prisoners and the girls, future single mothers according to statistics. It is a cult of no fathers, no workers, numerous taxis, free parking, free rent, free hydro, low lives, sleaze, welfare workers and the occasional man between jail sentences. Girls who grow up in this subculture without seeing a man go to work and only single mothers, usually follow in the footsteps of their mothers. Why bother going to school if you can get pregnant at 14 and the government will give you a monthly cheque and act as surrogate father for the remainder of your life. And if you have more kids, you get higher on the welfare roster bigger apartment, more money and a better parking spot according to the instructions from the welfare worker. These projects are now in their third and fourth generation of welfare recipients and nothing has changed. Those who are unfortunate enough to end up in these projects find it almost impossible to climb up the slippery slope to the normal world. There are few incentives to move out of this cobweb of welfare. We have become desensitized by these almost hidden social events. It is not politically correct to describe these actions in polite society. The social workers have a vested interest their jobs in maintaining the status quo. In 1997 California enacted a welfare law that put a five-year lifetime limit on benefits and required recipients to earn their cheques. Able bodied welfare recipients were required to accept any valid job offer. Refusing an offer could mean the end of an adults benefits and benefits could be lost for life by anyone convicted of serious welfare fraud, such as claiming fictitious children or seeking benefits from more than one county. Nearly one in four children in Canada is born outside of marriage. More government programs will no doubt increase this number, just like it will increase taxes and the national debt. Is it possible to get responsible politicians in Canada? |
